Indra in the Rigveda

Indra is the most celebrated deity in the Rigveda, with over 250 hymns dedicated to him—more than any other god.  He is revered as the king of the gods and is associated with thunder, storms, and warfare.  Indra's most renowned feat is the slaying of the serpent Vritra, which released the waters and brought rain to the land.  This act symbolizes the triumph of order over chaos and is a central theme in Vedic literature.

Other Prominent Deities in the Rigveda

Agni: The fire god, serves as a mediator between humans and gods, with over 200 hymns in his honor.

Soma: The personification of the sacred ritual drink, featured in 123 hymns.

Varuna: The guardian of cosmic order, addressed in 46 hymns.

Vishnu: Though a major deity in later Hinduism, he is mentioned in only 6 hymns in the Rigveda.

Shiva: Referred to as Rudra in the Rigveda, he appears in a limited number of hymns and is not as prominently featured as in later texts.

Thus, Indra stands out as the most extensively praised deity in the Rigveda.
